Videha Sharma is the Clinical Innovation Lead at the University of Manchester, where he bridges the gap between healthcare, technology, and design. With a background as a surgeon and a PhD in Health Informatics, he now specialises in digital and data-driven innovation in healthcare.

His work focuses on translating emerging ideas into real-world clinical practice, ensuring that technology enhances, rather than complicates, the experiences of patients and clinicians alike.

A strong advocate for design-led innovation, Videha has led multidisciplinary teams to build patient-centred digital solutions, develop new clinical services, and shape national health strategies. He believes that the healthcare industry can learn a lot from the design community and he is excited to share and learn at UX London 2025!

Design meets medicine

In 2024 Videha, a doctor and Emma, a designer joined forces to demonstrate the power of design by using it to pilot a new genetic testing service across the NHS, while influencing policy and commissioning decisions. The key to the success of this work was the combination of a designer working with a medical professional.

As the NHS continues to come under increasing pressure, innovation is seen as a key enabler to drive efficiency, reduce costs and improve care. However, innovating under pressure, with minimal resources and competing priorities is challenging.

In this talk, Videha and Emma will illustrate how combining design skills with medical knowledge allowed them to navigate a complex system, uncover cultural barriers to progress and effectively implement a new national multi-organisational service. Their learnings will highlight strategic opportunities and practical tips for design leaders and practitioners, with a focus on system level transformation using design-led innovation.
